[RECAP/ EN] 稍息立正我愛你 (Attention, Love!) Ep. 5

T-Drama
ATTENTION, LOVE!
Rekap Episode 5

Shao Xi was in a running competition and just won first place. Li Zheng came especially to support and encourage her. Shao Xi wanted to approach Li Zheng but her teammates and coach crowded her and prevented it. Li Zheng really was a considerate friend. He let Shao Xi enjoyed everyone’s congratulations and good wishes. He did not interrupt and just left after giving her the sweetest smile.

Shao Xi was celebrating with Ru Ping in a dessert café. She complained that it was hard to get over her crush. Shao Xi realized instead of getting over it, she actually started to like him more. Shao Xi was very worried that if she did not suppress her feelings, her relationship with Li Zheng might suffer. Ru Ping then mentioned that the fastest way to get over a crush was to like another boy, i.e., getting a rebound guy. Hmmm… Is this a wise advice?

At home, Shao Xi met Li Zheng in the corridor as he was exiting from the bathroom. Fully clothed! Why?! Hehehe… Shao Xi was contemplating Ru Ping’s advice and decided that it was too hard to do. She was softly talking to herself thus puzzling Li Zheng. Shao Xi dismissed his concern and said she was just thinking about college entrance exams. Shao Xi and Li Zheng were on their way to school the next morning when Li Zheng gave her some materials on college entrance exams to alleviate her concerns. Awwww… He even highlighted courses related to sports and recommended that she used her previous competition scores to ensure that she be accepted to quality colleges. How can the girl get over you if you continue to do these things? Shao Xi was surprised and was quiet for a moment. She eventually, expressed her gratitude and Li Zheng was satisfied.

Shao Xi was studying the admission information in class when Ru Ping interrupted her. Finding out that it was from Li Zheng, Ru Ping was worried that this was making it even harder for Shao Xi to get over him. But Ru Ping promised she would help. Shao Xi was just getting up the next morning when she met Li Zheng coming out of his room to go to his family house. Li Zheng wanted to clean the house since he had a break from school. Shao Xi offered to help but Li Zheng told her to stay study at home. A call from Ru Ping interrupted her. The very next scene was a group blind date that Ru Ping arranged. Shao Xi reluctantly sat at the end of the table. Introductions were made but before Kiki, Ru Ping’s cousin, could introduce Jin Li to everyone, he introduced himself and targeted his attention to Shao Xi. Swoon… Jin Li saw Shao Xi and remembered that she was the crying girl he met at the cinema. He teasingly asked whether this blind date was especially set up so that Shao Xi could get a new boyfriend. Shao Xi gave Ru Ping sharp glances and wordlessly asked her to follow her. All the girls excused themselves.

Left alone, Xiao Jian, Ah Ke, and Jin Li talked among themselves and realized that Shao Xi was the infamous boss of Zhuang Jing High School. Somewhere in a hidden part of the restaurant, Ru Ping and Kiki emphasized that there was no harm in getting to know more boys. Meeting more boys could potentially help her forget Li Zheng more easily. The boys on the other hand, were advising Jin Li to keep his distance from Shao Xi as she was a scary boss who went to a reform school and recruited girls to join a gang on behalf of her wanted criminal dad and bar hostess mom. Jin Li found this hard to swallow as he kept remembering the crying Shao Xi alone in the cinema. Instead of scaring Jin Li off, Xiao Jian and Ah Ke effectively perked his interest. Shao Xi insisted on going home because she was uncomfortable with the whole blind date setting. Ru Ping admitted that she was wrong to trick her into coming but she wondered if discomfort was her only reason for leaving. She asked pointedly if her refusal was because deep down, she still hoped Li Zheng would return her feelings. Wanting to prove Ru Ping wrong, Shao Xi stayed. Hahaha… Sometimes your best friend can know you a little too well.

Li Zheng was in Yan’s family home and he remembered the time when he came to pick up his photos from the studio. Li Zheng was staring at the only picture that could still be seen from the old exposed film but he wondered why the photo did not trigger any memory. He heard a noise from the garden and thought it was Shao Xi snooping around. He called out to her but was disappointed when she was not there. Well dude, what do you expect? You rejected her confession and declined her offer to help you clean! There is just so much ‘no’ a girl can take.

Shao Xi was playing a game at her phone while everyone else was talking over lunch. Jin Li noticed and came over to talk to her. He saw that she was playing the same game as he did and asked for her ID so that they can be friends. Shao Xi mentioned her ID name and effectively stunned the boys as she was famous in that game. The two boys thought that she was too manly but Jin Li found her, interesting. After lunch, the group was deciding where to go next but Shao Xi wanted to go home so Jin Li volunteered to take her there.

Once home, Jin Li asked if the reason she did not talk at lunch was because she already had someone in mind. Shao Xi demanded to know if Ru Ping told him. Jin Li denied it and clarified that he knew because he was there when she was stood up in the cinema. Jin Li and Shao Xi were still talking when Li Zheng came home and saw the two of them. And finally, jealousy arrived! If those eyes could kill… Shao Xi introduced Li Zheng to Jin Li. Jin Li introduced himself as a guy that she met at a group blind date. Li Zheng saw red! Li Zheng went inside the house after telling her off for not studying at home and going to a blind date instead. Jin Li assumed that Li Zheng was the crush but Shao Xi silenced him and dismissed him after expressing her gratitude. Li Zheng went inside his room and was bothered over the interactions below. He was listening to Shao Xi’s footsteps as if making sure that she did not linger outside. Shao Xi wanted to explain and considered knocking on Li Zheng’s door. But she decided not to and left it at that. Good for you Shao Xi! You do not owe him any explanation.

Jin Li came home and met his brother, Jin Wen, who was picking him up to go home to celebrate their father’s birthday. Jin Li was doubtful that their father wanted to see him but for his brother, he was willing to attend. At home, Jin Li was sitting at the dinner table waiting when Jin Wen came and gave him a gift for him to present to their father. It is clear that Jin Li is estranged from his father and the brother is trying to mend the relationship. The father arrived and Jin Wen invited him to sit in between them. The father did not take the offer and sat at the furthest possible seat away from the two of them. An argument broke up between Jin Li and his father, mainly because the father was disappointed over Jin Li’s refusal to study. He even compared him to the obedient Jin Wen. Exasperated, Jin Li gave his present and excused himself. Jin Wen followed and tried to hold him back by advising him to be more understanding of their father’s temper. But Jin Li asked the brother if he was happy living under their father’s rules all the time. Jin Li threw a final blow and hurt Jin Wen when he said he did not want to be a second Jin Wen who listened so well that he let his education, his work, his wedding, and the rest of his life be controlled by the father. Jin Li turned abruptly but still managed to steal a look at his brother, who was hurting, from his side mirror. Jin Li regretted it but left anyway. Sometimes it is your closest family member that can throw the biggest and most painful punch. Case in point!

Jin Li went to a convenience store for dinner and he started remembering his childhood when he proclaimed he wanted to be just like Jin Wen growing up. Next was another memory where the father punished Jin Li, by locking him outside the house, for his poor performance at school. The father even again yelled for him to be more like Jin Wen. Being compared to a sibling from such a young age, it is not a surprise that their relationship is now estranged. Jin Wen snuck out to give Jin Li something to eat and comfort him. Jin Wen told him not to take their father’s words to heart because they were both the same and one day, Jin Li would grow up to be more outstanding than Jin Wen.

Shao Xi came into the same convenience store as Jin Li and saw him crying. Originally Shao Xi wanted to ignore him to spare him of any embarrassment but she gave him a box of chocolates to comfort him with anyway. And the attraction continued to grow. I know Shao Xi is merely being kind but being kind can be misconstrued. She is leading him on. But this is dramaland and Li Zheng really needs to have a taste of the green eyed monster. Big time! So I guess, lead on.

At school, Ru Ping and Shao Xi were talking about entrance exams that were coming up in 4 months, when Jin Li came to deliver lunch for Shao Xi. And of course, Li Zheng saw this whole interaction. Li Zheng was unfocused in class after seeing this and even his teacher noticed it. After school, as promised, Jin Li waited for Shao Xi. Wanting to put an end to this, Shao Xi asked him to follow her. Again, coincidentally, Li Zheng saw the twosome walking away together.

Shao Xi lead Jin Li to a small street corridor away from the school. She asked why he kept coming. Jin Li admitted that he liked her and wanted to pursue her. Shao Xi did not believe that he would like her after only a few brief meetings. She said liking someone was not something to take lightly and should not be casually said. Jin Li laughed at her and said he had never “collected” a girl like her before and so was excited over the prospect. This earned him a nice big kick in the groin as she proceeded to lecture him on how to properly like a person. Jin Li finally understood why she was nicknamed ‘Zhong Ke’ and contrary to her intention, he actually became even more interested in her. Shao Xi was leaving just as Jin Li asked her out for a movie date on Sunday.

Li Zheng was on his way home and he started picturing Shao Xi and Jin Li being intimate on a bench. Hahaha… He lay down on grass and started imagining Shao Xi asking him why he was so bothered that she was kissing and hanging out with another boy. The imaginary Shao Xi asked him to just admit that he was jealous because he liked her. Yeyyyy! Finally a progress.

Li Zheng saw Shao Xi waiting at a crossing and happily approached her. Li Zheng asked why she was coming home so late. Shao Xi claimed she just finished talking with her friend so was now on her way home. Li Zheng asked who was the friend and before Shao Xi could answer, her phone rang. She picked it up and when she realized it was Jin Li, she asked Li Zheng to go home first. Li Zheng answered he did not mind waiting and did not want to go home first. I am loving the nosy Li Zheng! Shao Xi moved away from Li Zheng to take her call. Jin Li apparently called up Ru Ping to ask for Shao Xi’s number. He wanted to take her out this Sunday to the movies to get to know each other and gauge their compatibility. Shao Xi wanted to refuse him but Jin Li did not give her the opportunity and merely ended the conversation after issuing the invitation. Throughout the phonecall, Li Zheng was standing nearby and trying to hold back his jealousy. Li Zheng asked if she were going to go to the movie date and Shao Xi replied she was not sure. She might go if she was feeling better. Hearing this, he got an idea: he told her that Mama Zhong found out that she went down 56 places in her monk exam and was angry. Li Zheng was apparently childish and petty when jealous. Hahaha… Li Zheng was making sure she was preoccupied with worry so that she stopped thinking about Jin Li’s invitation.

At school, Shao Xi caught up to Ru Ping who had shared all her contacts to Jin Li and spread news of his growing interests in her to the whole school. Shao Xi clarified that yesterday, she wanted to convince him to stop pursuing her but she failed and now, Jin Li was even more determined to pursue her. Ru Ping was happy to hear this and wished she had witnessed Jin Li’s confession. Shao Xi also shared that Jin Li invited her for a movie date on Sunday but she had not expressed her agreement. Ru Ping screamed at her for her slow reaction and advised her to seize this opportunity. Shao Xi closed her big mouth when she saw Li Zheng approaching but Ru Ping intentionally increased her voice so that Li Zheng heard that another boy was interested in Shao Xi. The two girls finished their conversation and went back to class. The viewers can see that Li Zheng was listening to them the whole time. It looked like he was coming up with a plan. I am sure something to prevent her from going on that date. Hehehe…

Li Zheng was teaching Papa Zhong to use the computer when he asked him why next Monday was especially marked on his calendar. Papa Zhong belatedly realized that his anniversary was coming up and he had no gifts to present to Mama Zhong. Li Zheng claimed that he heard Mama Zhong said she would be very angry if he were to forget again this year. Li Zheng offered to help Papa Zhong buy a present for Mama Zhong since he had to go on a business trip this weekend and no longer had time to shop. Of course, he suggested Sunday since he was only free then. Hehehe… But since he had never bought present for girls or for Mama Zhong before, he needed help. And Papa Zhong walked right into that trap as next, on Sunday morning, we could see Papa Zhong arranging Shao Xi to accompany Li Zheng buy present on his behalf. Very smooth!

Shao Xi called Jin Li to inform him not to come because she would not be home that day. Jin Li also said that something came up so he needed to reschedule their date. Shao Xi knocked on Li Zheng’s door to inform him that she was ready. Li Zheng was sitting on his bed impatiently waiting and smiled brightly since everything was progressing nicely according to his plan. The little scheming devil! Both Shao Xi and Li Zheng put on their shoes but Shao Xi decided to change into her new prettier shoes. Awww… Shao Xi still has not given up on Li Zheng yet. On their way, they passed by a couple and Shao Xi stopped to stare at their intimacy. Li Zheng took notice and smirked meaningfully. The twosome visited some stores and stalls to look for the perfect gift for Mama Zhong and Shao Xi kept making detours for snacks.

They finally managed to find the perfect gift and so was on the way home when Li Zheng noticed that Shao Xi was limping. He told her to stop and bent down to check on her feet. He noticed that the heel of her foot was scraped. He sat her down on a nearby bench, medicated her wound, and bandaged it. Aaaannnnnnndddd kiss! No?! Well, I guess you don't feel romantic after touching a girl’s sweaty feet. Ok move on. In her heart, Shao Xi begged him not to treat her so well if he did not like her. Li Zheng told her off for not telling him that she was hurting. Owww… Li Zheng bought her new comfortable shoes and she was wearing them in the next scene.

Shao Xi was still stunned over Li Zheng’s gentleness and did not follow him as he was going across the street. Li Zheng called out to her and she snapped out of her daydream. Unfortunately, she crossed the street at the wrong time and got hit by a yellow speeding car.
Comment
Many may find Ru Ping intrusive and nosy but I actually see her as a loyal friend who sincerely cares for Shao Xi’s well being. It is just that she does not seem to see the bigger picture. She is stuck at the fact Li Zheng rejected her confession and does not take into account the other thoughtful things he does such as preparing study notes, selecting and highlighting college entrance information, snapping her out of her self-pity mode, and attending and supporting her at her running competition. She keeps pushing Dimple on Shao Xi and though she is not wrong to do that, I feel bad for Jin Li because she indirectly encourages Shao Xi to lead him on. It is a good thing that thus far, Shao Xi still follows her principle of not taking one’s feeling lightly. I hope as the story progresses, Shao Xi does not turn into an indecisive mess who cannot make up her mind.

Jin Li is a typical rich kid with father issues and the writer clearly wants us to sympathize his lazy and unmotivated ways because well, the father clearly has issues. But as an adult, I think we have to realize, sooner rather than later, that the reason we study is not to please parents. We study to better ourselves and make us a contributing member to the society. So far besides his traumatic childhood, we have yet to see Jin Li doing anything remotely ambitious, aside from pursuing Shao Xi, of course. But that is not important in the whole scheme of things because who wants a lazy, unmotivated, high school dropout as a boyfriend?! So for that reason, as cute as that dimple is, I am not rooting for him. That and coupled with his chauvinistic confession! Collecting?! Excuse me! Girls are not objects.

Li Zheng, on the other hand, is starting to realize his feelings! Yeyyyyy! And for a robot, he did it quickly. I love how manipulative he can get especially when he has something in mind. The way he maneuvers Papa Zhong until he not only seeks Shao Xi out, but also funds it and clears it with Mama Zhong, it is just genius! I am content to let him go all out on his scheming ways but after a while, he needs to come clean. I just wonder how long before he finally does. Unfortunately, Shao Xi’s accident will adversely affect her running career and thus, her college application. Most likely and to a certain extent understandably, Shao Xi will wallow in self-pity and hurt in the coming episode. I wonder how Li Zheng will deal with all this. He has always managed to snap her out of things and I think for this, the burden will still fall on his shoulders.
